報告人簡介:William B. Krantz received a BA in chemistry (1961) from Saint Joseph's College (Indiana) and BS (1962) and PhD (1968) degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana and the University of California in Berkeley, respectively. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the United States. He is President’s Teaching Scholar and Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado and Rieveschl Ohio Eminent Scholar and Professor Emeritus at the University of Cincinnati. From 2005-2008 he was the Isaac M. Meyer Chair Professor at the National University of Singapore. He currently holds an appointment as a Visiting Professor in the Singapore Membrane Technology Center at Nanyang Technological University. He was the founding Co-Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Membrane Applied Science and Technology (MAST) sites at both the University of Colorado and the University of Cincinnati. He served as Director of the Thermodynamics and Mass Transfer Program at the National Science Foundation. He is the recipient of Guggenheim, NSF-NATO and three Fulbright fellowships, and has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He is the author or co-author of 267 technical papers, 2 research monographs, and books on Scaling Analysis in Modeling Transport and Reaction Processes (Wiley Interscience, 2007) and Presenting an Effective and Dynamic Technical Paper (Elsevier, 2016); he also is the co-inventor on 26 patents. His current research interests include membrane formation, characterization and process technology.

     報告1內容簡介:

This overview of recent research in which the speaker has been involved at the Singapore Membrane Technology Center (SMTC) at Nanyang Technological University includes the following: novel silver-nanoparticle-impregnated hydrogels for producing potable water in disaster-relief applications; Evapoporometry (EP) for characterizing the pore-size distribution (PSD) of membranes, porous catalysts, adsorbents and fuel-cell electrodes; and the recently patented Centrifugal Reverse Osmosis (CRO) process that achieves desalination close to the thermodynamic restriction and thereby significantly reduces the specific energy consumption.

There is a pressing need to develop technologies for supplying potable water to people impacted by natural disasters. The SMTC has developed novel highly porous robust hydrogels impregnated with silver nanoparticles that can remove particulates and pathogens from water nearly instantaneously. The manner in which these hydrogels are prepared and their performance metrics will be discussed.

EP is a novel method for determining the PSD of membranes that is based on the vapor-pressure reduction caused by the curvature of a volatile wetting liquid within small pores. The PSD is determined by measuring the evaporation rate from flat sheet and hollow fiber membranes initially saturated with a volatile wetting liquid. EP also can characterize the change in the PSD owing to internal pore fouling. The advantages of EP relative to other PSD characterization methods will be discussed. A particular advantage of EP is that it also can be used to characterize the surface area of porous catalysts, adsorbents, fuel-cell electrodes and other porous media.

Desalination is limited by the thermodynamic restriction which is defined by the thermodynamic equilibrium pressure across a salt-rejecting membrane as a function of the water recovery for a specified saline water feed. Ideally one would like a desalination process to operate at the thermodynamic restriction since this corresponds to the minimum required pumping energy. However, this was thought to be impossible since it would require an infinite number of RO stages. The CRO process recently patented by the Singapore Membrane Technology Center can achieve desalination near the thermodynamic restriction and thereby can significantly reduce the specific energy consumption relative to conventional RO. This will be the first presentation of the novel and potentially transformative technology.

     報告2內容簡介:

This Workshop focuses on how to write a technical paper. The organization of this Workshop is as follows. First considerations are discussed that should be done prior to writing the paper. These include discussing with your advisor or your colleagues if this is the right time to write a paper on some aspect of your research; discussing the co-authors to be included; discussing the order for listing the co-authors; discussing the journal to which the paper will be submitted; downloading the guidelines for preparing the paper from the website for the chosen journal; downloading a recent paper published in this journal to serve as a guide for writing your paper. Writing an outline for your paper is strongly recommended. The procedure for preparing a good outline is discussed. Considerations that should be done after completing the writing of your paper then are discussed. These include in-depth proof-reading for errors and how to handle the grammar if your first language is not English. The generic structure of a technical paper then is discussed. This includes a detailed discussion on writing the Abstract and preparing the Introduction, Review of Prior Studies, Theoretical Development (if appropriate), Experiment Design and Procedure, Presentation and Discussion of Results, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, Nomenclature, References, and Appendices (if appropriate). Special considerations are discussed that might necessitate a departure from the suggested template for writing a paper such as writing a paper for a journal that requires you to include some sections of your paper as on-line supporting materials. An example is given of an outline for a paper and the published paper that emanated from it.
